Information Architecture/User Interface Design To match Bay Area residents' hectic pace, 415 structured the BART site to prioritize speed and ease of use. Armed with direct feedback from extensive user research, 415 helped BART streamline the site and created a home page that highlights the information users want -- namely, schedule details.
-- Content organization, intuitive section names, and enhanced search technology provides fast access to highly trafficked and desired information
-- Homepage teasers draw interested users to separate pages while keeping the homepage clean and clutter free
-- Clean visual design facilitates 'find and go' approach favored
by users
Accessibility Whether in stations, on trains, or online, BART strives to provide superior accessibility for everyone, including those living with physical disabilities. 415 shared BART's commitment to make the site usable and effective for the Bay Area's diverse residents.
-- Designed Bart.gov in compliance with Web Accessibility Initiative guidelines as well as the information technology standards of the Federal Access Board
-- Created two versions of the site -- one graphical and one for text-based browsers
-- Incorporated linguistic diversity; portions of the site can be viewed in several languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, French and German
Content Management Prior to the redesign, site maintenance was unwieldy and inefficient; most updates had to be funneled through the Webmaster. To modernize and streamline site management, 415 rearchitected BART's content management system (CMS) from the ground up. The new, decentralized CMS allows BART employees to update content, while the administrator retains sole access and editing permissions.
-- Created a permission-based system that allows each department to maintain respective site sections
-- Designed and created new display engine in XML and XSL, as well as a more robust database architecture
