Process

Below, we take you through the process of finding just the right look and feel for one client, Heller Ehrman LLP. Heller Ehrman’s previous website was black, dark, and imposing… it was the Darth Vader of Web sites. In reality, Heller Ehrman is (or was, before their collapse in late 2008) vibrant, full of character, progressive, and approachable. The firm wanted to let the world know about its true charms: to give visitors a sense for what it might be like to work at the firm or with one of the firm’s attorneys. We brought the firm through a design process that allowed them to explore different facets of the company - and to build internal consensus along the way. Finding the right design is often as much of a process of introspection, team work, and psychology as it is about colors and photographs.

First Round

This round is intended to push the client to choose a direction and a personality. We start with three designs that explore the client's edges: a conservative approach, a middle of the road approach, and something that's really out in left field. Click the name of the comp to see it.

1. Explorer: A conservative approach focused on traditional themes
2. Culture: Inspired by the artwork, colors, and style of Heller Ehrman's office.
3. Future: An Eero Saarinen inspired vision of motion, speed, and business.

Second Round

After much debate and discussion, Heller Ehrman chose direction #2. In Round Two, we explore the chosen theme with much more attention to practical detail. We implement sub-pages while also exploring variations on the theme. You may not notice a difference between some of the comps below - but there are subtle differences (such as color and graphical shifts) - and they're critical to the client. This client, in particular, was concerned about *color,* especially as it may be intrepreted in Asia. Thus, we explored many color variations.

1. Culture, version 1
2. Culture, version 2
3. Culture, version 3

Third Round

By the time we get to Round Three, all of the decision makers have signed-off on the design and we focus on nuts and bolts. We refine the refinements and produce a near final design. Subsequent to Round Three, there are usually minor tweaks that we don't put into a formal round.
